Taking on No.1: Marinos vs. Omiya, Marinos vs. Man United
July 8 – Yokohama – The Yokohama F. Marinos are preparing for two crucial home football games in the next few weeks, a match with J-League leader Omiya Ardija on Saturday and then Premier League champion Manchester United on July 23.
Both games will be held at Nissan Stadium in Yokohama, while the Marinos play on the road Wednesday against Cerezo Osaka.
The Nissan-sponsored Marinos match against Omiya in Yokohama may give the third-place team the momentum needed to vie again for the J-League crown, which would be their first championship since 2004.
Manchester United, meanwhile, begin an international friendly tour from Saturday in Thailand, arriving in Japan before their July 23 match with Yokohama, and then concluding the visit in the country with a match against Cerezo Osaka on July 26.
The Marinos are five points behind Omiya, and players including former international Shunsuke Nakamura and Yuji Nakazawa say they are excited about climbing up the J-League ladder and then taking on Manchester superstars such as Japanese player Shinji Kagawa, Wayne Rooney and Rio Ferdinand, under the direction of new manager David Moyes.
Tickets for the Marinos’ July 13 game are still available, while the match with Manchester United is sold out.
